Akshay Kumar is all set to gift his fans his upcoming film Gold. The film, that tells the story of India’s first Olympic gold win as an independent nation, is hitting the screens on August 15 this year.

The film will clash with John Abraham’s Satyamev Jayate on Wednesday at the box office.

While both Gold and Satyamev Jayate are eyeing the Independence Day window, trade analysts suggest that the Akshay Kumar film will have an edge over John Abraham’s movie.

As Gold hits the theatres tomorrow, see what the early reviews have to say.

Gold, directed by Reema Kagti, revolves around independent India’s first Olympic gold win. This feat was achieved by the Indian men’s hockey team on August 12, 1948. While the film has been inspired by true events, the makers have taken certain creative liberties.

“Reema Kagti’s direction is neat and uncomplicated. The match scenes are very nicely presented but at a few places, some of the cliches could have been avoided. But it’s praiseworthy how she took the film on a high in the finale. The national anthem scene would surely move viewers and it doesn’t seem forced. The patriotic fervor comes out perfectly!” mentions Bollywood Hungama in its review.

Akshay Kumar plays the role of Tapan Das, the man who helps India achieve the dream of winning its first Olympic gold as an independent nation.

News18.com writes about Akshay Kumar’s performance, “This is an extension of what Akshay has been doing in films like Toilet Ek Prem Katha and Padman, but he has championed the art of mixing with other characters and being comfortable in his own skin. This is so vital for a story like Gold whose spirit could dampen due to a superstar’s presence. He is there but not on the ground. His powers are limited and the game doesn’t even revolve around him, but that sense of helplessness makes his victory even bigger.”

TV star Mouni Roy makes her big Bollywood debut with Gold. She plays the role of Akshay Kumar’s wife Monobina and nails her role, according to early reviews of Gold.

Pinkvilla writes, “Mouni makes her debut with Gold and is the firecracking sassy wife of Tapan who is also like a nagging mother to him. Mouni owns every frame she is in and the chemistry between Akshay and her is seamless.”

From what the early reviews of Gold say, this is the perfect Independence Day gift Akshay Kumar’s fans have been waiting for. The film is all about patriotism, a subject that has become Akshay Kumar’s homeground for some years now. With Reema Kagti behind the wheel, looks like Bollywood will have a rocking August 15 at the ticket windows this year.
