A new bar overlooking the Queen Street Mall could be built as part of a refurbishment of the QueensPlaza shopping centre in Brisbane’s CBD.

The Queen Street Mall centre, which houses David Jones, opened in 2005 and its most recent redevelopment was in 2008.

Brisbane City Council received a development application from Vicinity Centres proposing a new balcony over the Queen Street Mall entryway that would include the bar.

The application said the balcony would be a positive addition to the Queen Street Mall.

“Using a combination of steel and glass for the structure and glass balustrades, the balcony is consistent with the existing character of QueensPlaza and the broader Queen Street Mall,” the application said.

The building’s facade is also set to change, with a glass awning around the Queen Street frontage and part of the Edward Street frontage also proposed.

New tenancies within the centre were also included as part of the proposed refurbishment.

Vicinity Centres executive general manager of development Carolyn Viney said the development would further enhance QueensPlaza’s status as the leading luxury retail destination in Brisbane’s CBD.

“The proposed redevelopment project introduces new luxury retailers to the centre and remixes the retailers found on the upper level with a premium fashion, cosmetics and accessories offer, complimented by two signature restaurants,” she said.

Mrs Viney added that Vicinity Centres was expecting to start planned works mid-2018.

The application to build a bar was an amendment to an existing approval.

The council would assess the application.
