The man accused of killing Gold Coast mother Tara Brown has been sentenced to 18 months’ jail after pleading guilty to an assault on a fellow prisoner.

Lionel Patea, 25, was issued the punishment at Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday for pouring hot water on the inmate at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre in Wacol in May this year.

He was originally charged with grievous bodily harm over the attack, which left the prisoner with burns to his arm, but pleaded guilty to a downgraded charge of assault occasioning bodily harm in Brisbane Magistrates Court earlier this year.

The court heard the water had been heated to near boiling in a microwave.

The prisoner is on remand charged with offences including torture and animal cruelty but it is believed Patea mistakenly thought him a convicted paedophile.

Patea has been committed to stand trial in the Supreme Court in Brisbane for the September 2015 murder of his ex-partner, Ms Brown, with a trial date yet to be set.
