Bruce Hwy police chase sparks traffic gridlock

UPDATE 5.35PM: Extensive delays are being reported by motorists headed southbound on the Bruce Hwy from the Sunshine Coast this afternoon after a dramatic police chase which ended in two arrests.

There are reports of major traffic congestion from Roys Rd, Beerwah, where the police chase ended, up to near Aussie World at Palmview, while Caloundra Rd is also backing up.

A police media spokeswoman said police had no longer blocked off the highway, having towed the vehicle away after tyre spikes were deployed to try and bring an end to what had been a dramatic police chase, with reports of between 13-16 police cars in pursuit as well as a PolAir police helicopter.

A man and woman have been arrested following the chase which members of the public have described as “mental” on social media.

Police were initially alerted by reports of an armed man making threats at about 3.30pm in Elimbah, between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

BREAKING: Two people have been arrested after a “mental” police chase this afternoon which has shut down the Bruce Hwy southbound.

Initial reports of a man armed and making threats came through to police at about 3.30pm at Elimbah, between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, before the pursuit moved north.

A motorist told the Daily he’d seen 13 police cars and two ambulances in pursuit of the vehicle heading south past Aussie World at Palmview at about 4.15pm.

Minutes later the police had a man and woman in custody, after the pair surrendered to police near Roys Rd, Beerwah at about 4.20pm.

Helicopters were called to assist with PolAir heading to help track the blue vehicle being driven by the man, but the chase ended not long after.

Motorists took to social media to describe the scenes this afternoon.

“This was mental,” one woman posted.

“Trying to merge on as the getaway car was coming, 10 at least cops cars zooming.

“Right hand lane trying to get over, left hand lane not knowing what the hell to do leaves us mergers on the median strip.”

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has advised the left lane of southbound traffic is closed and advised motorists to expect delays.


A MAN believed to be armed and making threats is being pursued by police and helicopters on the Bruce Hwy this afternoon.

A police media spokesman said the man is believed to be driving a blue car at the moment, and the first calls came to police at 3.30pm at Elimbah.

A passing motorist has told the Daily he saw about 13 police cars and two ambulances headed southbound on the Bruce Hwy, near Aussie World at Palmview, at about 4.20pm.

The spokesman said PolAir, the police tracking helicopters had been called to help the pursuit, after the man was reported as being armed and making threats.
