A male pilot has survived a helicopter crash in Mount Windsor National Park in far north Queensland.

Emergency services received a EPIRB distress call from the Robinson R-44 helicopter just after 1:30pm from an area west of the Daintree, near the McLeod’s River Crossing.

The pilot was flying from Cardwell, south of Cairns, to Weipa on western Cape York.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said a search and rescue helicopter discovered the wreckage in the national park about 50 kilometres north-west of Port Douglas about 2:30pm.

A paramedic was winched down and located the surviving pilot, who was the only occupant of the aircraft.

Police said the crash resulted in an “intense” fire in bushland.
